It isn’t exactly outrageous to suggest that, in modern terms at least, Chelsea have been significantly more successful than Burnley on a trophy-winning front. Since the moment that Roman Abramovich bought the Stamford Bridge side, they were able to invest literal billions in the strengthening of the first team and the drive for success. Burnley, on the other hand, often had a net spend during the same period that will have come in at less than the London club spent on a single player. It might surprise you, therefore, to learn that the two clubs have won a similar number of games to one another.

Whilst the modern era shows Chelsea to be the more successful of the two sides, the same can’t be said about decades gone by. Between the February of 1912 and the December of 1923, for example, the Blues failed to win back-to-back games against the Northern opponents, losing ten times. They won just two of the matches played, with two draws thrown in for good measure. In fact, it took until the 1950s before Chelsea were able to register successive wins in the top-flight, at which point they won three on the bounce. That was followed by six draws, though, of which four were in the FA Cup.

Modern Dominance

Perhaps only the takeover of Manchester City by the Abu Dhabi United Group had as profound an impact on a football club as when Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea. Prior to that moment, the London club struggled to offer any kind of attempt at success in the top-flight, instead often struggling in the middle of the table and occasionally being relegated. With that in mind, it is not all that surprising that Burnley’s most common route to success against the West Londoners came in the history of both teams. In the modern era, it has been Chelsea that have dominated the fixture.

It would be untrue to suggest that there have been no moments in which the northern team have managed to bloody the nose of the Blues, but it would certainly be the case that it has happened rarely. Even then, it has been much more likely that the Clarets have managed to walk away with a draw than to notch up wins on a regular basis. Some of that is down to the clash in style between the two teams, with Burnley in the modern era playing a more ‘agricultural style’ than Chelsea have opted for. Whether they like it not, though, Chelsea have had Burnley’s number more often than not.
