Chelsea and Coventry City first met in the August of 1924, with both clubs then playing Second Division football. That is a good a reminder that Chelsea’s current standing amongst the game’s elite is a relatively modern development. The fixture spent much of the 20th century in the lower divisions before both clubs eventually established themselves higher up the pyramid, with Coventry having been amongst the Premier League’s 22 founding members in 1992.

An FA Cup Upset at Highfield Road

Coventry’s clearest highlight against Chelsea specifically came not in the league, but in the FA Cup. It arrived when a Coventry side that was playing outside of the top two divisions at the time knocked Chelsea out at the quarter-final stage at Highfield Road in 2009, watched by a crowd of 31,407. It was the ground’s biggest attendance of that season.

A Painful Spell in the 1970s

Chelsea were beaten 5-1 at Highfield Road in the January of 1978, right in the middle of that difficult decade for the Stamford Bridge club. Coventry, by contrast, spent almost the entire 1970s as a settled top-flight side, giving them a rare period of ascendancy over a Chelsea team that would not rediscover its footballing power until decades later.
