When you consider the modern history of both Chelsea and Leeds United, you would be forgiven for expressing a degree of surprise at the fact that the Yorkshire club began the rivalry with back-to-back wins against the West Londoners. You would likely be even more surprised to learn that they won the very first game between the two teams 5-0. What adds a degree of shock to the issue is that that was a point at which Leeds United were less than a decade old as a team, whereas Chelsea had been a going concern for more than two decades, although admitted on the slide at the time.

Anyone who knows anything about English football will know that there was a period of time when Leeds United were the team to beat, challenging at the top of the First Division in the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, between the start of the 1960s and the end of the 1970s, Chelsea managed to pick up just eight wins against Leeds United. In the same period, the Yorkshire side won 17 games, which included six wins in succession between the November of 1974 and the same month four years later. Add in the three successive draws that followed and it took the Blues until 1984 to win again.

Not Much of a Modern Rivalry

Although Leeds United have had more than a few wins against Chelsea in the history of the two clubs, it would be misleading to suggest that there has been much of a rivalry to speak of in the modern era. That is hardly a surprise, of course, given the fact that Leeds have struggled to maintain their presence in the top-flight during the same period that Chelsea were bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and spent a huge sum of money winning trophy after trophy. In fact, the two clubs only met 18 times between the turn of the millennium and the end of the 2023-2024 season.

The fact that Leeds United won just three times across those 18 meetings is proof positive that this is not a rivalry to speak of in the modern day. For supporters of neither club, there is something of a mirror being held up when comparing the two. That is because Leeds have long had the reputation of being a dirty club, whilst Chelsea isn’t exactly a side that has been seen to play cultured football throughout its history. The interesting thing is that the three wins that Leeds managed during the 24-year period in question all came when they stopped the Blues from getting on the scoresheet.
